Sunderland City Council has given the go-ahead to make a bid to become the UK City of Culture for 2021. The development of the bid would come from Sunderland Cultural Partnership, working with cultural organisations and communities across the city.
The UK City of Culture programme creates a national cultural event focused on a particular city or event over a calendar year. The UK's next City of Culture is Hull in 2017.
Councillor Mel Speding, City Council's Cabinet Secretary and Chair of Sunderland Cultural Partnership said, "A bid could help raise Sunderland's national and international profile, it shows ambition, it increases visitor numbers and it can be a great opportunity to showcase our city.
Helen Connify, from Sunderland Cultural Partnership said “Sunderland has seen a real step change in its ambitions to place arts and culture at the heart of the city's regeneration plans. We believe this bid will harness the creative energy and cultural heritage of the city and change perceptions of Sunderland. We look forward to unveiling further details in coming weeks.”
